@GL My husband is the same. He says “Once you stop f**king, what do you have in common anymore?” which I think means, in his own charming way, that if you’ve drifted apart to a place where you can’t be together anymore, what’s the point of staying friends? I think this is the truth in 90% of breakups. Staying friends afterward – especially immediately afterward – is a mission, so you have to truly believe a friendship with that person is worth it. And most people who’ve been hurt by a breakup don’t think that.

And you’re right, you should never settle for being “treated like shit”. No one should ever have to be treated like shit, much less volunteer for it!

I like this advise..except the fact of remaining friends with an ex… I never made friends with an ex…they are enemies now…when I am going in a relationship, i do not settle for less..maybe there were times but still, i rather be called ‘high maintenance’ than a settle to be treated like shit.

Dump them before they dump you…it hurts but learning to kill your feelings takes practice to perfect it.

Exactly, one month is a dribble in the lake, especially if you’re still seeing this person. How much time apart you need totally depends on the people, though. Anywhere from two months to two years, really. I always think if you’re really meant to be friends, it will work itself out naturally. The best things in life always do :)

I have two wonderful friends who dated for three years and decided they were actually better off as friends. They still live together and they’re still pracitcally best mates. It’s really special.

I so agree with everything Steph said. Expecially the gritting your teeth and staying AWAY from the phone – when all this time HE was the one who made it better.

I’ve been there, and it hurts like nothing else. One month is no time at all – see how you are in six months. Until then, be gentle with yourself – and avoid him at all costs.
