@Erin – that’s always how I felt too, and then I remembered the nights I came home thinking “I had such a great night, thanks to that awesome dude who talked to me in the pit” – and I think “Gosh, I could be that dude” except, you know, not a dude. For every person who thinks you’re “that weird chick” there another person who’s thinking “Omigod, a cool chick is talking to me. Yuss!”

That’s the dumb thing about making friends. You have to set yourself up for failure SO many times … and just as you start to wonder “why am I doing this again?” you meet someone who totally changes your life :)

Thanks for your post. It was awesome. I moved to Vancouver 9 months ago and haven’t really met anyone yet because I’m so shy. When I go to shows, I’ll make eye contact and smile at the bartender, and the friendly guys who let me into the front of the pit, but those are both fleeting moments and I never connect with anyone. I always feel like everyone is with someone else and if I engage in conversation, I’ll be “that weird girl at the show who tried to talk to us”, you know? I probably worry too much. I’m going to try to be less afraid of failure. Vancouver is a big city, and I know that I would never treat anyone like they were losers if they thought I looked interesting, so maybe other people wouldn’t act that way towards me, either.

@Holly – you’re exactly right on both counts. Once you’re in it’s near impossible to extract yourself, and, while it can be really handy to say “Oh, I see that person wearing a metal shirt – they are more likely to be my kind of person” you should never be closed-minded when it comes to making friends – some of the zaniest, nicest, kindest and most random people lurk behind seemingly “normal” appearances.

I’ve found with metalhead mates, that once you’re in with one, you’ll meet a whole lot more! They tend to band together and will know a lot of other interesting people for you to meet. Also, don’t be afraid of getting to know non-metalhead looking people too. One of the most hardcore metalhead chicks I know doesn’t look anything like a metaller until you get her in that mosh-pit and stand back :-)
