• Cthulhu’s Closet: Opeth t-shirt

    March 25th, 2010 | Cthulhu Closet

I am not ashamed to admit I own an entire drawer of metal shirts. It’s not a small drawer, either. In fact, it’s only “technically” one drawer because at any one time several of my shirts are in the washing, and even then I have to jam the thing shut.

Many of these shirts are knock-offs, because when I first got into metal this was the only way you could get them in NZ, unless you wanted to order in from Europe at double whatever the Euro was back then. My favorites are always the tour tees from the shows I go to – I figure, in twenty years time, these will be the vintage shirts. And then I will finally be cool.

This Opeth shirt is from their 2006 Ghost Reveries tour, which I saw in Auckland with CDH. We’d only just started going out, then. Also, it was the first international show CDH had seen in … maybe ten years. It was the show that convinced him to get back into metal, and into drumming. So, this is a favorite shirt of mine.

    • Opeth Ghost Reveries shirt (from concert)
    • GLP pleated skirt (Smoove)
    • Red ribbed stockings (Sock Dreams)
    • Black tuxedo jacket (courtesy of Mother Metal)
    • disc necklace (gift from sister)
    • Jeffrey Campbell wedge boots

It’s a bloke’s medium (they had no smalls left) and I actually quite like the bagginess. I wear it with this old tuxeudo jacket (my mum’s, back in the 70s) with the sleeves rolled up, and my short schoolgirl skirt. I cannot wait for my SWAN Clothing sock garters to arrive, as my socks are in desperate need of gartering.

Here, I’ve removed the jacket, and changed into these striped pirate stockings. You can see how the horizontal stripes really shorten my legs (especially compared to the red stockings, above), but I’ve always loved the Alice in Wonderland quality of vertical striped legwear.

Sometimes I like to roll the sleeves under, to show off my girly muscles. Grrrr!

How do you wear your metal shirts in new and interesting ways?

I get really long belts and wrap them around my waist several times; it looks different every time I wrap them! And a lot of my metal shirts are baggy too, so it’s extra useful. Works sometimes with more heavy duty necklaces.

  • Love the skirt and the tux jacket – what an awesome almost gypsy-metal vibe! I’ve been hunting for the perfect vintage tux or waistcoat, they are hard to find here!

I like to flip my tees inside out and make ruche up the sides by scrunching and safety-pinning the fabric, then flipping them right-side out and wearing; it girls up loose shirts and you can create a fishtail hemline, which I find more flattering than a straight one sometimes. Pinning it together in the back can create some shape in a boxy /tee, too, and you can use a 1″ band button for it to add cred. :)

I’m always dying for more t-shirt ideas, especially dressing/girling them up, thanks!

  • Great shirt! I would know, I have the same one \m/

  • @JBThazard – a great shirt from a great band from a great tour :) Mine’s looking rather faded now.
