• Cthulhu’s Closet: Stripes and Skulls

I love patterns – especially stripes and skulls. Now, fashion “rules” state you shouldn’t mix patterns. But fashion “rules” also probably have a thing to say about my two drawers of black tshirts, and some of my more hideous sock collections, so I say, “bugger you!”

I am jiving to the Carcass blasting out my window

    I am wearing:
    • multi-coloured shirt (Supre)
    • Black/white striped socks (I’ve forgotten)
    • Alice Cooper “School’s Out” shirt (Rock2Wgtn, 2008)
    • Dirty Dog d-ring shirt (Dirty Dog outlet store, about 8 years ago)
    • Jeffrey Campbell wedge boots

Then, I swapped out this shirt, which I didn’t think was working, for my awesome swirly skulls – from Jung Bluth, a Hamburg designer.

I've been doing my hair in these pigtails a lot recently.

I actually think mixing these two black/white patterns looks really cool – I think it would look awesome with a black corset, rather than the tops I’m wearing, but it’s freezing cold outside at the moment :)
Does anyone have any other ideas for styling two different patterns together?

You’re right about the second combo working much better than the first – I think it’s easier to pair two patterns when they’re cohesive in the way that the stripes/skulls are. (Same colors with just enough contrast between the prints to pair well, I guess – stripes with spirals seems to work!) Pairing horizontally-striped socks with anything is pretty brave, but finding another pattern that works with them is a rarity so high-five!

I want to love the D-ring shirt because I love hardware a little too much, but the bell sleeves are kind of bulking out your arms – if they were more fitted or elbow-length it’d be more flattering, but I love the rest of the outfit, especially the way that the t-shirt sleeve lays over the long ones, it gives it some interesting shape/structure and evokes the strong Balmain shoulder a little to me. :)

  • It’s really odd, because that skirt looks AMAZING in RL, but doesn’t photograph well. I don’t know why. Maybe I just like it too much I’m biased.

This was one of those odd outfit combos that ALMOST but NOT QUITE worked. But, this is how you learn! I am by no means a fashion expert, but I like talking about something specific with these posts rather than “this is what I wore”.

  • I have this idea:

Not metal, but the progenitor of mixed patterns, right?

  • Love your wedges.

  • @Islander – you SO crack me up :)
