Metal Mixtape: Countess Bathory Edition

Metal Mixtape

Have I got a treat for you all this week! I’ve been a little Countess Bathory obsessed after researching and writing the Metal History post this week, so I’ve made you a special Countess Bathory Metal Mixtape. Some of these songs you metalheads will know, some will be completly new to you (as they were new to me).

Kamelot – Elizabeth

On 2001’s Karma, Prog-power band Kamelot included this epic homage to the Countess written in three parts: ‘Part I: Mirror Mirror’, ‘Part II: Requiem for the Innocent’, and ‘Part III: Fall From Grace’.

This video is from their live DVD Cold Winters Night, and includes all three parts.

Bathory – One Rode to Asa Bay

Norwegian black metal legend Quorthorn named his project after the blood Countess. Their first albums were pure black metal, but from Blood Fire Death onward their sound changed to this more viking-influenced, slightly more melodic epicness. This was the only music video Bathory made, and they never played live. Quothorn wrote one song about the Countess called ‘Woman of Dark Desires’ (off Under the Sign of the Black Mark’, but I don’t like it as much. So I’m giving you this instead:

Electric Wizard – Torquemada 71

Stoner metal, from their 2007 album Witchcult Today, portrays Elizabeth as a dominatrix, their “necroqueen”.

X Japan – Rose of Pain

Another gem discovered through the Global Metal DVD, X Japan combine traditional metal with Japanese pop and aesthetics, creating a sound that’s uniquely Japanese. This is awesome. A live track from 1989’s “Blue Blood”, about our favorite Hungarian Countess:

XIII Stoleti – Elizabeth

A Czech gothic rock band’s interpretation on the Bathory legend. I LOVE this.

Clock DNA – Buried Dreams

And now for something COMPLETLY different. Another Czech group, this time epic industrial group Clock DNA, who speak to Countess Bathory from behind the brick wall in her castles, wondering how she feels about her past.

Cradle of Filth – Bathory Aria

As a band who revels in legends, myths and ghosts, Cradle of Filth embrace the legend of Countess Bathory in much of their music. From their 1998 album Cruelty and the Beast dedicated to the Blood Countess, “Bathory Aria” stands out to me as one of Cradle’s better songs (I wish I like them more than I do – I’ve never been able to get into Dani’s voice).

Venom – Countess Bathory

Ah, one of my favorite songs ever (I can’t explain why, since it really is quite awful) and the only song I can play on the bass. From 1992’s Black Metal, one of the most influential underground records of metal history.

This is a live version from the 1985 Combat tour (with Slayer and Exodus). It is even more awful than the album version. Gods, I love it! The concentration on their faces as they play the bridge!

Slayer – Beauty Through Order

Play some Slayyyyyyeeeeeeeeeer!

From 2009’s World Painted Blood, a great track from classic thrashers about Ms. Bathory.

I know I haven’t included lots of good songs – “Elizabeth” by Aiden, “Bathory Erzsebet” by Sun O))), “The Bleeding Baroness” by Candlemass, etc, etc. But let me know if you think of any others.

Raise your glasses to the Countess!
