• Metal Mixtape: Folk Metal Edition

    May 7th, 2010 | Metal Mixtape

So I left the awesome post I wrote yesterday during my lunch break – Fashion of Folk Metallers – on my work computer. Sad Face :( So that won’t go up till Tueday next week. So I’ll probably be extending Folk Metal Week to the end of next week to make up for that mistake :)

You knew it was coming. Part 1 of a two part folk Metal Mixtape.

    Bathory – Valhalla

From the Hammerheart album (my favorite after Blood Fire Death). Black metal just doesn’t get any better than this.

    Skyclad – Spinning Jenny

The original version with Martin on vocals, from 1992′s Burnt Offering to the Bone Idol.

    Korpiklaani – Wooden Pints

Who couldn’t love these silly Finns?

    Turisas – Rasputin

Do any of you remember that awesome disco band, Boney M? Well, this is Turisas – a finnish folk metal band – covering their best song “Rasputin”. They released this as a single in 2007. The video is a crack-up and the song itself is genius!

Eluveitie – Of Fire, Wind and Wisdom

Eluveitie are probably my favorite band at the moment. I think they’ve nailed the perfect balance of folk and metal. The composition of this song is just spot on.

    Amorphis – Better Unborn

The first Amorphis song I ever heard. From their Elegy album, an eclectic mix of melo-death and middle-eastern instrumentation.

    Cruachan – Celtica

A slideshow of Scottish landscapes to Cruachan’s most excellent song “Celtica”.

    Finntroll – Trollhammaren

    Hell, yeah!

The Lord Weird Slough Feg – Warrior’s Dawn

From Down Among the Deadmen. These guys are generally categorised as an American “Folk Metal” band, although some would argue against that classification. Whatever you call them, I call them “fucken wicked”.

What folk metal or folk music is on your playlist at the moment?

One Response and Counting...

There’s almost always folk metal in my playlist. Here’s a little one. I would put some links but alas! my internet is restricted here.

    Heidevolk – Saksenland
My favourite song from Heidevolk. I got to know these guys because of the split cd they did with Týr and Alestorm.

    Skiltron – Fast and Wild
My favourite local band. Just listen to the bagpipe intro. This song in particular gives a great deal of energy. The one you need on a Monday morning.

    Týr – Ride
Another awesome viking song. The melody is great.

    Fferyllt – Jule
This is from a band from Russia I got to know because the bagpipe player from Skiltron played in their album. I love the female voice, specially in this song. They have, in the same album, a great cover of Eluveitie’s Inis Mona.

Folkearth – Lord of the Spear
This is a great project with musicians from all over the world. I love the mandolin in this one.

    Korpiklaani – Palovana
This song is magical. Really. Whenever I’m feeling bad (physically or emotionally) I play this and feel better instantly.

Saurom Lamderth – El Arquero del Rey
Spanish band. Like Mago de Öz only better IMHO. They changed their name to Saurom now. I love the flute on this one.

Cruachan – Some Say the Devil is Dead
A classic Irish song done by this awesome Irish band.

Skyclad – On With Their Heads!
Great lyrics. Great melody. 100% Skyclad.

    Ensiferum – LAI LAI HEI
This song is simply perfect. I have loved it from the moment I heard it years ago.

    Cheers!
