Metal Mixtape: Folk Metal, Part 2
May 15th, 2010 | Metal MixtapeThis week’s Metal Mixtape is, of course, Part 2 of the Folk Metal Mixtape. I’ve found a few well-known and a couple lesser-known groups for you to enjoy.
We’ve had our Dutch friend sleeping over for the last two days. She’s very hot and very sarcastic and very cool. So I’ve been having a wonderful weekend, but now I have to get some serious work done!
Tyr – Hold the Heathern Hammer High
I’ve been a fan of Tyr since they first started. An EPIC official video release from their Light of the Northern Star album, you HAVE to watch this. I love it.
Suidakra – Dead Man’s Reel
I only caught the end of these guy’s set at Wacken last year, because they were on FAR too early in the morning. But they’re great :)
Mago de Oz – Fiesta Pagana
My favorite Mago de Oz song and the first song I heard that made me think I’d love to be a whistle player in a metal band one day. (anyone wanting to hook up a whistle player for a melo-death project, let me know :))
Svartsot – Jotunheimsfærden
Wow, I’m not writing that song title again.
Skiltron – Sword and Shield
Agentinian celtic / pagan metal. I’m not sure how much cultural relevance this has, but I’m a sucker for a good whistle :)
Wolfchant – A Paganstorm
German pagan metal. You know the rest.
Wintersun – Starchild
The side project of the man behind Ensiferum. Yes, this sounds a lot like Ensiferum, but hey, I don’t think that’s a bad thing.
Blackmore’s Night
The “Blackmore” here is Ritchie Blackmore (of Deep Purple fame). Rumor has it DP keep asking him to come back, but he’s too happy playing in a medieval band with his wife.
“Lorelay” is one of my favorite Blackmore’s Night songs – the Lorelay is a particularly nasty bend in the river Rhine in Germany. Sailors often used to wreck themselves on the rocks, and, of course, a legend grew up around the place of a beautiful women luring sailors to their doom.
Korpiklaani – Happy Little Boozer
And, let’s end on a drinking song!
Raise your horns and prepare for more brutal – and less folk – metal next week!

Awesome mix this week, Steff! Tyr got my attention, so I listened to the rest. *no more bandwidth now* Always wondered, how does one pronounce Tyr anyway?
Wow, there are some bands I’ve never heard there! I’ll give them a shot (when I’m home – no You Tube here).
Tyr is awesome. And that song in particular is so powerful! According to Wikipedia it’s pronounced English /ˈtɪər/; Old Norse: [tyːr] – something like the ie in fierce.
And you included a Skiltron song!! I love them. About cultural relevance, here in Argentina we are a strange mix of races and cultures. We were a Spanish colony but the port of Buenos Aires recieved people from many countries ever since its early days, and many came from the UK. Aaaaand we were also 2nd to the Caribbean in piracy business – yarrr!
You forgot OTYG and VINTERSORG!!!!!
