Metal Mixtape: Grand Guginal Music
June 18th, 2010 | Metal MixtapeSo the theme of this week – Sweeney Todd week – is music that invokes the spirit of Grand Guginal.
Sweeney Todd (broadway revival version) – The Ballad of Sweeney Todd
I’ve put this in again, because I LOVE it.
Sweeney Todd – a Little Priest
This is from the 1982 version with Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. One of my other favorite songs. It always cracks me up :)
Repo: The Genetic Opera – zydrate anatomy
Now THIS is a musical. This is a shitty shitty video – but you get the idea.
And here’s a video of the wicked trailer, so you can go and find this yourself. You can see the delightful Ms Hilton and the dude from Skinny Puppy.
Skuldom – Orgiastic Blasphemy
Right, now lets get on to the metal. Skuldom are a staple on the New Zealand scene, infamous for a couple of gigs where they performed with several sheeps heads that smelt so foul everyone cleared the venue and listened to the show from the safety of the street. Also, the meatbra. Warning: gore, blackmetal and a hot chick covered in blood.
Cannibal Corpse – Make them Suffer
I’m not a HUGE death metal fan, but I’ve always loved Cannibal Corpse. We saw them live … four years ago, now, I think? Brutal show, and the nicest, most soft-spoken and humble bunch of guys.
Disgorge – Rancid Bowel Sarcoma (live)
I was actually looking for US Disgorge videos, but I came across this. The vocals! Wow. The drums sound like trash can lids.
Necrophagia – Embalmed Yet I live
The key to good death metal is groove – and Necrophragia don’t pull off groove all the time, but when they do, they write some amazing DM. Phil Anselmo on guitars here.
Dimmu Borgir – Puritania
Sometimes I feel I am the only metalhead alive who doesn’t like Dimmu Borgir. “Puritania” – this little 2min ditty – is the only song I like. They are trying to be Cradle of Filth, and I’m just not sure that’s something to aspire to.
What are you listening to this week?

Hey Steff! You are not the only Metalhead that doesn’t like Dimmu Borgir. I dont like them either! And this because of 2 reasons:
1. All the scene-kids with their dimmu-shirts are going on my nerves.
2. Their music is crappy.
And why are they labeled as black metal? Black Metal is something completely different!
But your Blog is fine as allways!
Greetz from MrPolek!
Yes, I’m not the only one! I completely agree – I cannot understand HOW by any stretch of the imagination one could get the Dimmu Borgir sound mixed up with, say, Immortal. I classify them under the genre “Cradle of Filth Wannabes” which is probably not a legitimate genre but much closer to what their music actually sounds like.
We don’t have scene kids with DImmu shirts over here, satan be praised!
