• Metal Mixtape: HP Lovecraft, vol. 3

    September 11th, 2010 | Metal Mixtape

And lo, the third and final Lovecraft Mixtape, and the end of HP Lovecraft month. Next week I’ll return to regular, non-themed articles, and I have some beauties coming up, including a guest post that puts most of my writing to shame :)

HP Lovecraft Historical Society – If I Were a Deep One

Eviscerate the tourists … blub blub blub blub bloody blub …

    Celtic Frost – Nocturnal Fear

From their album Morbid Tales, this gets on the list because it references Yog-Shothoth, and also because I love it – sounds so much like Venom.

Blue Oyster Cult – The Old Gods Return

Many of the Cult’s songs make reference to HP Lovecraft, but this is one of their overtly Lovecraftian ditties – I actually quite like this. It’s got an almost thrash sound to it – the guitar reminds me of Robert Plant at many moments.

    Rage – The Crawling Chaos

Got to see Rage live last year. Love ‘em.

Fields of the Nefilim – Last Exit for the Lost

For a little while, my husband dressed like their fucking gorgeous lead singer – dusty jacket, cowboy hat and boots. So hot. I miss these guys.

    Entombed – Strange Aeons

Entombed, when they were awesome and not boring.

Shub-Niggurath – Lying the Dormant Awaits

I’m actually getting into death metal more and more lately – this is a bit manic at times, but I really like it. Shub-Niggurath are a Mexican band who, judging by their name and the content of most of their songs, like their Lovecraft.

    Therion – Cthulhu

And, to end, some early Therion – you won’t hear much of their later style (choirs and female vocals and symphonic elements) here, but you will hear something equally epic. I hope they still play this earlier stuff live.
