• Metal Mixtape: Indie (and Metal)

    May 30th, 2010 | Metal Mixtape

So I’m doing something a little different this week. Every band in this metal mixtape was not, in fact, chosen by me, but by YOU, the readers, either through the comments of the Why I Hate Indie and Why I Love Indie posts, or through email.

The Mountain Goats – No Children

THANK YOU for suggesting these guys. I’m ashamed to admit I’ve never heard them before, and I really like them. The least singer sounds like a cross between Weird Al and the dude from <>. Lyrics – fantastic. Music – decent.

    Regina Spektor – Fidelity

Hmmmm. I’ve actually heard this before – I think it was on an advert in NZ somewhere. I’m not sure this is my kind of thing, but she has a really unique voice.

    Sparta – Cut Your Ribben

These guys remind me a little of AFI. I love the guitar tone in this. Just not the vocals.

Siouxie and the Banshees – Cities in Dust

So I lied. I am cheating, because I already know (and love) Siouxie and the Banshees. I always considered them “Goth”, rather than “Indie”, although I understand the lines are very blurred. Enjoy.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Weeping Song

My feelings for Nick Cave are already abundantly clear.

    Chad VanGaalen – Flower Gardens

Wow. My friend Imogen said “Chad VanGaalen is an animator as well as a musician. He animates his own music videos and they will give you nightmares.” So true.

    Änglagård – Jordrök

I’m sounding like a broken record here, but THANK YOU V for introducing me to Änglagård, a remarkable Swedish prog metal band. Unfortunately, this was the best quality video I could find that allowed embedding. Wow.

    Minsk – White Wings

From the album “The Ritual Fires of Abandonment”, a stunning piece of music. Given by some the label “metalgaze”, which is my new favorite word, ever.

OK Go – Here it Goes Again

A suggestion from Natalie by email, and also a favorite of CDH. Neither of us think that much of the song, but check out the video (if you’ve never seen it before, it’s a crack up!)

I have to say a huge Up the Irons to everyone who suggested bands, because I’ve now found lots of new music to listen to.
