    After a whole week discussing Christian Metal, I’m embracing my girly side, and spending a week talking about personal style from a unique, Steff Metal point-of-view. I’ve written close to 10 000 on this topic – yeah, I know! – and I think even you guys will find something to interest you.

    To start the week off kicking, I’m hosting a giveaway! Yes, that’s right – I give you something for free. Do you remember a couple of weeks ago, I posted that wicked cool oxidized brass arrow ring in Plunder for Metal Chicks? Well, the talented Nyne from Brilliance Found has agreed to give one away to one Steff Metal reader. Now, I know I have a lot of male readers, and this is probably not the kind of giveaway you were hoping for, but you’ll just have to wait till Nuclear Blast start sending me promo packs. Also, it would make a great gift for a girlfriend or sister.

    This ring is seriously krieg. I love big, statement jewelry and a ring that stretches over your entire hand totally gets my vote. Some people might look at this and see Native Americans, whereas I see Robin Hood and Iron Age Europe. I’m waiting for my own to arrive this week :)

    I am also particular fond of this new design of Nyne’s – The Pirate Sword. Nothing more metal than pirates!

    I also got the opportunity to ask Nyne a few questions about jewelry-making, personal style and inspiration.

    What does “personal style” mean to you?

    I believe personal style is what happens when you don’t think too much. It doesn’t necessarily mean following trends — but it definitely means putting your own spin on them! Fashion is such an individual thing & I always find it inspiring to see how different people interpret it & wear it. To me, personal style is all about being unique & feeling comfortable in your own skin.

    I think it’s important to feel confident in how you look & what you’re wearing — whatever it is. That confidence will stand out & shine far brighter than any jewelry ever could. I aim to create jewelry that inspires that confidence in the wearer.. the little extra kick in your step that comes when you feel great!

    What inspires you?

    My jewelry is heavily inspired by nature, texture & form. Sometimes I joke that I am inspired by everything.. & I have pages upon pages of design sketch ideas to prove it! I try to design pieces that interact & flow with the wearer — in my opinion jewelry should do more than just ‘look good’; it should accent the body & look like it was made to be there. It should stand out but blend in, & never overpower. That is why I photograph most of my pieces on models; the visual impact is far greater than just seeing the piece on it’s own. I hope this helps people to visualize how the jewelry is meant to be worn & how it accentuates the body. Sometimes the most simple design transforms into something amazing when it’s put on!

    What inspired this particular piece? (the oxidised brass arrow ring we’re giving away)

    Lately I’m in love with creating statement rings: I love how easy it is to update your look with a single piece! When I’m designing, I’m constantly putting shapes & components on my hand to get a better feel for how they would look worn in ring form. When I came across this arrow I just knew it had to be a knuckle ring.

    This ring combines two of my favorite elements in jewelry design right now: floating knuckle rings & glamorized weaponry. I love the idea of pairing the elegant with the deadly; in this case, the sharp arrow & the delicate lines. I love this ring in particular for how light it is on the hand — it really looks as if it is ‘floating’ or flying on your knuckles when worn. And it’s definitely a show-stopper: people can never figure out how it stays on the hand!

    It’s my take on two of the hot trends for Fall 2010 — tribal motifs & heavy textures.

    How did you start designing jewelry?

    I started designing jewelry out of necessity: I was impossibly tiny as a young girl & I didn’t have pierced ears, so naturally a good 90% of the jewelry I loved window-shopping for I could not wear. We had a retail bead shop in our local mall, so I took my design dreams there & spent many hours pouring over all the beads & findings. By age 8 I was already selling my creations at small craft shows & family garage sales. I’m a little older now, selling in slightly different venues, but my passion & innovation for jewelry design remains the same. It’s been a very ‘full circle’ experience for me, & I can honestly say ‘I have the best job in the world’. :)

    Do you have a favorite musician / band / song / movie right now?

    Whenever I am asked questions like this, I always have to go back to my favorites, music-wise: 2 Many DJ’s. They are Dj’s (of course!) who create mixed compilations of bits & pieces of songs, recordings & audio clips from all different genres. The result is a really eclectic mix that changes completely every 3 minutes or so.. which is great inspiration for me when I’m working!
