The running order for Wacken 2011 has been released, and metalheads all over the world are planning their days around their chosen bands and bemoaning the inevitable clashes. Helpfully, the Wacken website includes the Running Order Tool, where you can tick all the acts you want to see and it automatically gives you a personal itinerary and points out all your clashes so you can feel sorry for yourself.

Based on the current Wacken Running Order, (subject to change) my festival is shaping up as follows:

    Wednesday 03. Aug 2011

    20:00 – 21:00 - W:O:A Firefighters – Beergarden
    00:00 – 01:00 - Mambo Kurt – W.E.T. Stage / Headbangers

    Thursday 04. Aug 2011

    19:00 – 20:15 - Helloween – True Metal Stage
    20:30 – 22:00 - Blind Guardian – Black Stage
    22:30 – 00:00 - Ozzy Osbourne – True Metal Stage

    Friday 05. Aug 2011

    12:00 – 13:00 - Ensiferum – Black Stage
    14:30 – 15:30 – Van Canto – Party Stage
    14:30 – 15:30 – Morbid Angel – Black Stage
    15:45 – 16:45 – Sodom – True Metal Stage
    17:00 – 18:00 - Rhapsody Of Fire – Party Stage
    18:25 – 19:50 - Deadlock – W.E.T. Stage / Headbangers
    20:15 – 20:45 - Suidakra – W.E.T. Stage / Headbangers
    20:45 – 23:00 - Judas Priest – True Metal Stage
    23:15 – 00:15 - Kyluss Lives – Party Stage
    02:00 – 03:00 - Apocalyptica – Black Stage

    Saturday 06. Aug. 2011

    12:00 – 12:45 – Moonsorrow – Black Stage
    12:00 – 12:45 – Visions Of Atlantis – Party Stage
    14:00 – 14:45 - Kataklysm – Black Stage
    15:00 – 16:00 - Dir En Grey – True Metal Stage
    16:15 – 17:15 - Mayhem – Black Stage
    17:30 – 18:30 - Iced Earth – True Metal Stage
    20:00 – 21:30 - Avantasia & Guests – True Metal Stage
    21:45 – 22:45 - Kreator – Black Stage
    23:00 – 00:15 – Motörhead – True Metal Stage
    23:05 – 23:50 – Tokyo Blade – W.E.T. Stage / Headbangers
    01:50 – 02:50 – Subway To Sally – True Metal Stage

I’ve got three clashes – I’ll probably go see Van Canto, since Morbid Angel’s last album was pretty terrible and I’ve more chance of seeing them over here than Van Canto. I’ll probably go see Moonsorrow because I was mainly goingto see Visions of Atlantis out of curiosity. And I haven’t decided between Motörhead and Tokyo Blade, but I have seen Motörhead before.

I haven’t finished checking out all the bands yet, to see if there’s any hidden gems I’ll be gutted I missed, and a few of these bands aren’t must-sees, but this is a good basic idea of how my Wacken will shape up. If you want to meet up, best days for me are Wednesday and Thursday.

If you’ve ever been to a festival, what was the worst clash you ever had? Who did you choose in the end?

  • [...] post was inspired by the lovely Steff Metal. She posted about the Wacken 2011 lineup and asked her readers what their worst festival scheduling clash was. I tend to get a bit ranty [...]

  • That’s awesome, I need to recheck my list of ‘lesser known bands that I want to check out’ and redo my schedule. As it is there are too many wet t-shirt competitions and not enough time!

  • Here’s what me and Andy are thinking. I can’t really make out yours … :p
    Do we overlap much?

Steff…not to mess up your schedule or anything…but you have more than two conflicts. Morgoth is on Friday between Deadlock and Suidakra (Honestly…Suidakra or Morgoth..thats a tough choice for me).
Hail of Bullets is on Saturday at the same time as Kreator (HoB is really good too…if you have any love for the band Asphyx you need to check thm out…Martin Van Drunen really brings it during a live show)

  • Runs off to listen to Morgoth and Hail of Bullets …
Honestly, apart from a couple of bands like Blind Guardian and Ensiferum, I’m pretty open to whatever way people (and beer) happen to pull me. That’s how we ended up at JBO last year and they were so much fun.

    @Steff
What did you think of Morgoth and HoB?
Morgoth reminds me of early ” Leprosy” and “Spiritual Healing” era Death. I think if I had to choose though I’d probably go with Suidakra.
They’ve put out back to back amazing albums in “Crogacht” and “Book of Dowth” so I bet thats going to be a great show. Besides, from what I can tell, they dont get nearly as much love as they deserve.
Now HoB is another story…I got to see them play this year at MDF 2011, and they crushed their set. If you liked their music I promise they will be worth hearing live.
