AetherCon is one of the largest steampunk events in New Zealand, and is closely associated with Steampunk New Zealand – responsible for many of the steampunk attractions down in Oamaru. Put simply, AetherCon is a big convention to celebrate everything steampunk (as well as associated interest groups and genres like dieselpunk, cyberpunk, and science fiction awesomeness). I’ve attended two previous years, and it’s going from strength to strength. I am excited to finally be bringing my books to the event!
At AetherCon, you’ll find stalls, displays, workshops and performances from around New Zealand – everything from steampunk clothing and jewellery, to clocks and gadgets, food and finery. There will be a costume competition, genre celebrities and honoured guests, and performances by movie makers, authors and entertainers. Running co-currently with AetherCon is CostumeFest – a cosplay-style event with a wider appeal drawing a larger crowd to our little corner of weirdness. There’s even an official event photographer wandering around capturing the fun.
There’s also the AetherCon costume ball on after the event. Usually I don’t go to this as I’m too tired out from vending all day, but I’m told it is tons of fun! Bring your best suit or uniform, costume or corset, bustle and hat. Everyone welcome. Costume is not compulsory, although it is encouraged. There’s no age restriction, although there are burlesque-style performances on the evening.
Where can I find your stall?
In the AetherCon hall, beside the stand of my amazing friend Amy from Northwic clothing and accessories, you’ll find me. I will have a table of books, bookmarks, and other booky things. You’ll be able to pick up your own copy of The Sunken, At War With Satan, and a couple of other surprise items which will be revealed SOON. I’ll be signing books for no additional cost, and will have a cool prize draw, too.
Will you have EFTPOS/Credit Card available?
There is apparently going to be an EFTPOS machine at the door for everyone to use, however, I have booked my own machine, so I will have EFTPOS/Credit Card available on the day.
What about your upcoming book, The Gauge War? Will that be available at AetherCon?
I was planning to launch The Gauge War, the latest book in my Engine Ward series, at AetherCon 2015. However, I’m running a little behind with the edits (I know, I know, what a surprise!) and so I’m not going to have the paperbacks printed in time. However, you ARE going to be able to pre-order your copy, which I can send out as a ebook or paperback when they’re ready. I’ll have more details about the launch of the Gauge War soon – I’m just waiting on a couple of details before I share all the excitement.
So yes, you will be able to order your copy, but you just won’t be able to read it quite yet. It’s worth the wait, though. I am pretty excited about this book. Of all three books in the series, the Gauge War is probably the darkest. Some of my favourite characters do some really shitty things or have some shitty things happen to them. It is the book of the fall – where everything seems hopeless.
Book three, Thorn, will be coming out in early December, just in time for Christmas shopping.
In the meantime, you can grab a signed copy of one of my other books. And remember, I will have EFTPOS/Credit Card available.
AetherCon is held in the Guineas Grand Ballroom at the Ellerslie Events Centre, from 10am-6pm on Saturday 12 September. If you’d like to come along to AetherCon, you can either buy your ticket at the door ($15 adults, $5 kids, under-5s are free), or book them here.
If you haven’t read it yet, you can pick up The Sunken, my dark fantasy novel, on Amazon now!
Be the first to grab a copy of my new book, The Gauge War, when it comes out in (hopefully) September – Sign up for the mailing list.
