Metal Mixtape: The Black Death Edition

Brutal Tunes, Metal Mixtape

Thank you to all the folks on the Steff Metal Facebook page who suggested these songs after I admitted my complete brain fart when it came to coming up with plague-themed metal songs. Any more to suggest? Add them in the comments.

Demon – the Plague

Great song by the hugely underrated British band Demon, released in 1983. Thanks to V for reminding me of this!

Cannibal Corpse – Evisceration Plague

Black Death – Night of the Living Death

Apparently, Black Death are one of the earliest African-American metal bands. Sent in by Johnawar,

Richard Pryer Plays Black Death Metal

Your non-metal song for the week. Found by Johnowar while typing “black death” into youtube. My last boyfriend used to love Richard Pryer.

Metallica – Creeping Death

Hands down, the best song Metallica ever wrote, ever.

Kreator – The Ancient Plague

Can’t believe I forgot this one. Cheers Kuba \m/

Swallow the Sun – Plague of Butterflies

This is more of a “philosophical” plague

Behemoth – the Thousand Plagues I Witness

Yay, I got mentioned on SteffMetal. I am famous on the internet ;-).

Nah, but I have some thought about the songs. I think that in a lot of cases the plague is a allegory for christianity. Don’t you think?

@MrPolek – definitely. It’s a good allegory too, because the plague marked a great period of decline for the church in Europe. I think sometimes it also means humanity in general – a plague upon the earth.

Not really a song about the Black Plague but a good song nonetheless, Naglfar – A Swarm of Plagues
and maybe a song about a more modern plague, Overkill – Elimination

Steff, I’m sorry I didn’t add this comment to your Facebook before you ran this post. Unquestionably, Incarnia’s “Yersinia Pestis” should have been included, since not only is the song about the black plague but it’s named after the bacterium that causes the plague. And it’s also just a great fucking song:
