Metal Mixtape: Wacken 2011

Brutal Tunes, Concerts & Grog Fests, Metal Mixtape

If you’re not at Wacken this week … well, I pity you. But here are some songs I’m probably listening to, and you can listen too, and it will be like you’re here, except without the beer and steak sandwiches and Wacken shenanigans.

Blind Guardian – Valhalla

This is STILL one of my favorite live songs from one of my favorite bands of all time, ever. :)

Judas Priest – Nostradamus

I was pretty gutted KK Downing pulled out of Judas Priest at the beginning of the Epitaph tour, but still I can’t wait to see some of my favorite Judas Priest tracks. And call me a heathen if you must, but I loved the songs from the Nostradamus album (the songs, not the album – too many 2-3 minute interludes made the whole thing ridiculous, but you can’t fault this awesomeness) and I hope they play this:

Shining – Deathtrance

Blackjazz by the Shining made it on to my Top Ten Metal Albums of 2010 list, and of all the avant-garde wankery going on in metal in recent years, this is by far my favorite album. I’m looking forward to seeing these guys live.

Van Canto – Fear of the Dark

Andy, a friend of mine is an amazing singer, is SO into these guys – and can you blame her? I know there are a lot of silly metal parody bands around, but that doesn’t make Van Canto any less mental. My favorite singer is the bass man. Pum pum pum pum. Van Canto are on super early in the day, and I’m looking forward to rocking out in the front row with Andy.

Helloween – I Want Out

It’s a very power metal Wacken Open Air for us this year – not that I’m complaining. This is my favorite Helloween song, so I’m definitely stoked to see it live!

Wacken Firefighters

Essential festival attendance (I am in here somewhere)

Ensiferum – Iron

I missed seeing these guys in Aus a couple of years ago, am so happy they’re on the bill. Also, I’ve never noticed how hot their lead singer is!

Subway to Sally – Sieben

The first song I learned all the words to in German. You know things are getting good when someone pulls out the hurdy gurdy

Kreator – Enemy of God

I’ve seen Kreator before, but they’re so fucking fun I’m going to see them again.

Katyklysm – Where the Enemy Sleeps

Sometimes I like these guys, sometimes I find them really boring, but I’m told they absolutely go off live, so I’m keen to give them a go.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing live soon?

Avantasia were amazing! They put on such an incredible show, and Kai Hansen came to sing with them. Proper review coming soon :)

Valhalla live was indeed epic, so was the Bard’s Song !!! (Less epic was the wall of death failure who make a lot of us fall without knowing why lmao !) But you forgot about Airbourne and I hope you saw them they were just amazing as usual !! Sepultura, Sodom & Motörhead were pretty epic too !

@L – yes, I don’t know WHAT happened with that wall of death! That was so weird! I enjoyed Sodom and Motorhead, too, but I thought Judas Priest put on the best show of the whole festival. And Ozzy the worst.

I saw Blind Guardian perform Valhalla live this past November, and unf. It was magical.

I’m going to see Katatonia perform live soon, which I’m very excited about, and a week after I’ll be seeing Decapitated & Decrepit Birth which I’m almost equally pumped for!
