In the heart of London lies the Engine Ward, a district forged in coal and steam, where the great Engineering Sects vie for ultimate control of the country. For many, the Ward is a forbidding, desolate place, but for Nicholas Thorne, the Ward is a refuge. He has returned to London under a cloud of shadow to work for his childhood friend, the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
Deep in the Ward’s bowels, Nicholas can finally escape his strange affliction – the thoughts of animals that crowd his head. But seeing Brunel interact with his mechanical creations, Nicholas is increasingly concerned that his friend may be succumbing to the allure of his growing power. That power isn’t easily cast aside, and the people of London need Brunel to protect the streets from the prehistoric monsters that roam the city.
King George III has approved Brunel’s ambitious plan to erect a Wall that would shut out the swamp dragons and protect the city. But in secret, the King cultivates an army of Sunken: men twisted into flesh-eating monsters by a thirst for blood and lead. Only Nicholas and Brunel suspect that something is wrong, that the Wall might play into a more sinister purpose–to keep the people of London trapped inside.
The Sunken is my newest novel, and I’m more proud of it than anything else I’ve ever created. While At War With Satan was fun to write, it was kind of an experiment for me, to see if I was happy self-publishing. It contains a few mistakes that I need to fix. The Sunken, and the three books that follow it, have consumed the last seven years of my life. It’s been meticulously researched, written and rewritten again and again after being torn apart by various editors, and my amazing designer V has outdone herself with the stunning cover. I have passed over two offers by small presses to self-publish, and I couldn’t be happier with the result.
The ebook is going to be released Tuesday 12 September, 2014. You can now Pre-Order a copy of The Sunken (Engine Ward Book 1) from Amazon – which means that it will appear on your Kindle like magic on release day. The paperback will follow (I don’t have a date for this yet, but should be sometime mid September.
Well, you get the thrill of having the book magically appear on your Kindle. But mainly, it’s to help me out. Pre-ordering helps my book climb the ranks in Amazon, meaning more people see it and purchase it. If you’re keen to purchase a copy, pre-ordering would be awesome!
Will the book be available in Kindle Unlimited?
Yes. If you’ve signed up to Amazon’s new Kindle Unlimited subscription service, you will be able to download and read The Sunken for FREE. Yay!
Will the book be available on other vendors?
Not right away. I’ve decided to take advantage of the exposure offered through the new Kindle Unlimited program, which requires me to be Amazon-exclusive for three months. When that three months is up, you’ll be able to purchase the ebook through all the other retailers; B&N, Apple, Kobo, etc.
Why is this under a different name to At War With Satan?
Because At War With Satan is a contemporary humor fantasy book, and the Engine Ward series are dark fantasy books set in an alternatve history Georgian London, I decided to publish them both under separate pen names. S C Green is my name for my darker, more serious fantasy books, and Steff Metal is for bizarre, funny fantasy stories. My non-fiction writing ebooks, like the Grymm & Epic Guide to Blogging, are now published under S Metal.
Lots of authors do this to help their fans find books they like better. For example, Tom Holt writes humorous fantasy under one name, and historical novels under Tom Holland.
Will The Sunken be available as a paperback?
It certainly will! I don’t have an exact release date for it yet, but it will be some time in September. You’ll be able to buy copies from Amazon and other online retailers, and I’m going to be doing a couple of events here in New Zealand (Armageddon Auckland and Aethercon), where you’ll be able to pick up a copy direct from me.
When will the second Engine Ward book be released?
I am aiming to have The Gauge War, the second book in the Engine Ward series, up before my birthday in February. The first draft is 3/4 of the way finished now, and I’m already working hard to get it done asap. We will see how that pans out in reality, but the beauty of self-publishing is that you won’t have to wait a year or more to find out what happens next.
I’m gonna be posting book-related articles, playlists, and excerpts here on the blog up until release day, so stay tuned! In the meantime, you can pop over to Amazon and pre-order your copy of The Sunken (Engine Ward Book 1) today!
