My husband CDH (the Cantankerous Drummer Husband) is a musician, a chronic debater, and an all-round awesome person. A few years ago, he started jamming with another mate, Ross (ex Trial by Fire/Heavy Artillery), first on some metal/hard rock songs, and, more recently, on punk rock. Earlier this year, they – along with bassist Lucas Hogan – formed the Auckland punk rock band Skulls and recorded their debut EP, Out of Step. I’m not going to be so presumptuous as to review this here – I am completely and utterly biased and will pretty much say anything is good in exchange for sexual favours – but I will say I was blown away with the quality of the recording, and the fun, catchy songs in this release. If you were looking for some classic punk to listen to, give this a spin.
I love punk, but I’m really picky about it, and this is exactly the sound I love. Skulls have more of an American punk rock vibe – cleaner and fresher than the grating, muddy sounds of old school English punk (not that English punk is shit or anything, just that it’s different). Think Misfits or Blitzkid, but without the horror references. The songs are catchy, especially the title track “Out of Step”, and my personal favourite, “Daylight Robbery”. My husband is a metal drummer by trade, and you can hear a bit of this coming through as well.
I’d love it if you’d give it a listen and let us know what you think! If you like the songs, show some support for my lads and drop a fiver for the album. And, if you get the chance, check out Ross playing with one of NZ’s best punk acts, Shitripper, at the Lucha Lounge this Saturday 12 October.
