Steff Metal’s not-so-epic, end-of-year survey

Tr00 Metal Life

steff-metal-photoshoot

It has been a seriously amazing year for me, and I hope it’s been so for you, too. But now I’m looking ahead to 2012, and I’ve got plans you wouldn’t believe.

So, next year things will be changing around here, and I hope for the better. The reason I don’t post as often as I’d like (2-3 times weekly instead of 10 times weekly) is because I have a full time job, and then I come home and write for clients, and then I answer emails (usually 40+ a day) and then I hang with my husband, schmoo the cat, see my awesome friends, go to classes, paint, draw, read, and listen to, read about and write about metal. I love this blog, but I only have a finite amount of time to devote to it, and I’ve always been a fan of quality over quantity.

But next year I’m cutting back my hours at my day job to pursue writing, which is a big and scary and awesome thing. But it means, among other things, I’ll have more time to devote to Steff Metal, and I want to know – what do you want me to do with it?

I would LOVE to hear your opinion – in the comments of this post, on the Steff Metal Facebook page, or via email to steff AT steffmetal DOT com. Here are some things I’d love to know:

What are your favorite types of articles / categories?

If I were to increase the amount of posts I do each week, what would you like to see MORE of?

What would you like to see LESS of?

Is there anything you’d like me to write about that I don’t already write about?

I am entertaining a few different ideas: Increasing the amount of NZ content to include NZ metal bands, as well as NZ dark artists, performers, etc. Doing a LOT more Metal History content. Writing more about my various writing projects and my own illustration – personal Steff stuff. Doing more general alt stuff – art, fashion, etc. Bringing in 1-2 weekly review writers. Would any of those things make you go “yay” or turn you off this blog?

I’m going to be doing a redesign of the layout sometime next year – any thoughts or suggestions?

Any other suggestions to improve this blog?

When someone writes an post he/she retains the idea of a user in his/her
mind that how a user can understand it. Therefore that’s why this piece of writing is outstdanding. Thanks!

The articles I enjoy the most are the ones about the metal subculture, album reviews, travel articles and outfit posts. I second goatlady on the pop-up windows.

More NZ bands, though many people on this blog seem to be from overseas. Maybe some of them would like to come to NZ one day and we could all have a piss up or something.
More stuff about metal sociology, is metal Nietzschean?
Art gallery stuff would be cool too. People might want to exhibit in my exhibition later on next year. It would be good to see more stuff like that at the festival.
I reckon day jobs are crap, so if that is what you wanna do then go for it.
Give me a pen and I’ll write crap for you.

My favourite posts tend to be the ones based around your global travels but it’s a little unrealistic to expect you to file more of those. Other than that, I’ve really enjoyed the posts on metal culture, the gig/album reviews etc.

The one thing that I would suggest is definitely keep your writing voice – it’s one of the reasons that I really enjoy the blog.

Steff,

It’s I6Z6A6N from Miami again.

I want to reply to this post in 2 parts.

First, the survey. I feel the you way you have managed your blog is excellent as it stands, and if anything needs to be done, is to get you out on the field more often as you do a phenomenal job of taking advantage of your adventures and making the most of them.

Second, and this is somewhat lengthy but definitely needs to be here. I have been a Metal fan since the age of 17 and forward (30 years old now) and it has been one of the best rides I have enjoyed without no signs of slowing down. I have been inspired to do A LOT of things in my life. From traveling to the many websites I used to run. I have had many influences, but your blog was one of the 2 elements (The other is X-entertainment.com, one of my first major experiences on the internet from the moment I started using the internet.) that finally pushed me over the edge to make a blog on Metal. I read a good chunk of it and I am mesmerized by how you approach Metal and that was the spark that ignited the gas tank of creativity I’ve been known to have. Many thanks for making your blog happen and inspiring a side of me that was bashful to come out and scream like a Phoenix Rising (a la Destroyer 666, I needed to reference that album \m/ ).

With Sincerity and a HEAVY sense of appreciation.

Quality always wins over quantity.
The main thing it’d be cool to see more of would be interviews. Interviews are fun, & give us insight into our favourite performers.
I know that they’re also tricky, because you have to wrangle other people, but it’d be cool ^_^

Wit regard to posting frequency,I’ll take quality over quantity any day. Personally I love your online shopping posts (although my PayPal account, not so much). I like your site design but I’m not a huge fan of external links popping up in that window thing, it makes them hard to open in a tab for looking at later/bookmark/add to rss/share. But keep up the awesome work in general \m/
